The Origin: A Visionary Tale of Rehabilitation and Preservation

In the vast expanse of the Free State landscape, just outside the small town of Philippolis, nestled in the heart of South Africa, Tiger Canyon emerges as a beacon of hope and sanctuary for the majestic creatures that tread its grounds.

Founded by the visionary John Varty, Tiger Canyon has made headlines again for a momentous event — the birth of three tiger cubs, each carrying the rare white tiger gene.

In the late 90's Varty ventured into Ranthambhore and Kanha in India, where he encountered the majestic creatures, spotting only a single tiger in Ranthambhore and another one in Kanha.

Upon returning to South Africa, Varty harbored a singular objective – to prevent the disappearance of tigers. His mission statement echoed with purpose: "To create free-ranging, self-sustaining populations of tigers in the hands of private enterprise in and out of the Asian Continent." Thus began Tiger Canyon in South Africa.

In 2017, Rodney Drew, one of the main investors took over management of the private game lodge and transformed the private game lodge into the luxurious retreat it is today. Drew's expanded, Tiger Canyon's boundaries, growing it into the 6100-hectare private reserve it is today.

Continued linage and re-wilding efforts

Tiger Canyon took the initiative and laid the foundation for more reserves to follow in their footsteps in this conservation effort. They have transcended their initial experimental phase of assessing the adaptability of tigers to African conditions. Over the past two decades, the third and fourth generations of wild-born, wild-raised tigers have established self-sufficiency, signifying a remarkable milestone in their journey toward sustainability. Within the boundaries of Tiger Canyon, no cages are confining them, only different camps, separating the male tigers that might otherwise kill for territory. The tigers roam freely, hunt for themselves and are fully adapted to the environment.

The reserve boasts the privilege of being home to the only two white tigers living freely in the wild. Recently, the reserve witnessed a remarkable event as Tibo, a white Tigress, gave birth to three adorable cubs.

Tibo was the first white tiger to be born in the wild since the 1950s and is a symbol of the successful conservation efforts at Tiger Canyon. The three cubs, while not white, carry the rare white tiger gene, adding to the genetic diversity of the tiger population and sparking hope for the future of tigers. This has sparked global interest, particularly due to their genes.

The lodge's commitment extends beyond the tigers to a comprehensive cheetah rewilding program. In 2013, Tiger Canyon embarked on a ground-breaking initiative by reintroducing the first rewilded cheetah into the Free State, marking the return of these magnificent creatures after an absence of over half a century. This effort underscores the commitment to preserving both native and non-native endangered species.

Guests are offered a unique opportunity to walk with wild cheetahs, feeling the presence of these incredible animals and sharing their territory. The tireless work invested in habituating and rewilding these big cats into their natural habitat underscores the lodge's holistic approach to wildlife conservation.

Journey into Tomorrow:  Empowering Tourism for Conservation

Tiger Canyon's commitment extends beyond conservation efforts. As the global community grapples with conversations about conservation, Tiger Canyon embodies responsible tourism, where conservation isn't just a notion or an idea, but actually something they do every day.

Tiger Canyon's partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) enhances its impact, channeling resources towards global conservation efforts. Through re-wilding programs and dedicated efforts, Tiger Canyon is at the forefront of ensuring the survival of these astonishing animals.

Over the past decade, Tiger Canyon has hosted three delegations from Indian tiger and cheetah authorities, including a recent visit in October 2023 led by the Chief Wildlife Warden of Madhya Pradesh Province. India's interest lies not only in Tiger Canyon's tigers but also in its invaluable rewilding expertise. Tiger Canyon stands out globally for successfully rewilding tigers up to the third and fourth generations, unmatched anywhere else on Earth. Collaboration extends beyond borders through partnerships like the one with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the cheetah metapopulation initiative, including efforts to supply cheetahs for relocation to India and provide rewilding expertise for reintroducing wild white tigers to the renowned Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

The funds generated through tourism enable the lodge to sustain and expand its conservation initiatives. By choosing responsible travel, guests participate in a movement that goes beyond leisure—it becomes a powerful force driving positive change.
